Whiteout Survival crafting and gear upgrade materials guide

Whiteout Survival does not use the open-ended crafting system found in many survival games. You do not gather wood and metal to manually craft axes, clothing, weapons, containers, or tools for individual Survivors.

Instead, equipment progression revolves around Hero Gear, Mastery Forging, Legendary Hero Gear, Chief Gear, Chief Charms, and Hero Exclusive Gear. Each system uses different materials and improves different combat statistics, so knowing what to save—and what not to spend too early—is an important part of account progression.

Quick Take: Hero Gear unlocks at Furnace 15, Mastery Forging at Furnace 20, Chief Gear at Furnace 22, and Chief Charms at Furnace 25. Early players should focus on usable Hero Gear and balanced Chief Gear. Later, Essence Stones, Mithril, Charm Secrets, Lunar Amber, and Widgets become increasingly valuable bottleneck materials.

Does Whiteout Survival Have Crafting?

Yes, but only in a limited equipment-progression sense. Chief Gear can be crafted and upgraded with specific materials, while most other equipment systems focus on enhancing, forging, ascending, or upgrading gear you already own.

There is no general crafting table for survival tools. The important equipment systems unlock gradually as your Furnace progresses.

1. Hero Gear

Hero Gear unlocks at Furnace Level 15. It is equipped directly on Heroes and provides Hero and Command bonuses based on the equipment piece, class, quality, Enhancement level, and later Mastery or ascension upgrades.

Regular Hero Gear can be unequipped and reassigned between Heroes of the appropriate troop class. This makes it unnecessary to build a fully developed set for every Hero you unlock.

How to Enhance Hero Gear

Hero Gear Enhancement can consume:

  • 10-point Enhancement XP Components
  • 100-point Enhancement XP Components
  • Other Hero Gear
  • A combination of XP Components and spare gear

Lower-quality Hero Gear can be useful as Enhancement XP, but do not automatically consume everything marked as spare. Keep enough usable pieces to equip your important Infantry, Lancer, and Marksman Heroes first.

Which Hero Gear Should You Upgrade First?

Concentrate resources on Heroes that actually appear in your important formations. A practical priority is:

  1. Equip your main Infantry, Lancer, and Marksman Heroes.
  2. Bring the most important gear pieces to useful Enhancement levels.
  3. Concentrate additional investment on your main Arena and Expedition Heroes.
  4. Move gear when changing Heroes instead of maintaining unnecessary duplicate high-level sets.
  5. Keep valuable Mythic gear for later progression instead of casually consuming every duplicate.

Infantry commonly gain more practical value from durability-oriented pieces, while damage-focused Lancers and Marksmen may benefit more from offensive Hero Gear. The specific Hero and mode should still determine the final priority.

2. Mastery Forging and Essence Stones

Mastery Forging unlocks when your Furnace reaches Level 20 and an eligible Gold-quality Hero Gear piece reaches Enhancement Level 20.

Mastery Forging uses Essence Stones and increases the strength of that equipment beyond normal Enhancement.

Where to Get Essence Stones

Current sources include:

  • Bear Hunt
  • Intel Missions
  • Growth Missions
  • Mystery Shop
  • Foundry Shop
  • Arena Shop
  • VIP Shop
  • Frostdragon Tyrant Shop
  • Canyon Shop
  • Tundra Trading Station
  • Alliance Mobilization
  • Mia’s Fortune
  • Reward chests and packs

Not every source will be equally valuable on every account. Compare the opportunity cost of shop currencies before buying Essence Stones instead of another limited item.

Do Not Spread Essence Stones Too Thinly

Mastery Forging becomes increasingly expensive, so putting a few Essence Stones into every Hero Gear piece can leave your first formation underdeveloped.

Before a major Mastery investment, check that:

  • The gear belongs to a Hero class you use regularly.
  • The piece supports an important combat statistic.
  • You are not about to replace the Hero or equipment.
  • You have enough Essence Stones to reach a meaningful improvement.
  • An active or upcoming development event does not reward Essence Stone use.

Upgrade Priority: Build one strong combat formation before trying to perfect every Hero. Hero Gear XP is easier to replace than late-game materials such as Essence Stones and Mithril, so be increasingly selective as you move deeper into Mastery and ascension.

3. Legendary Hero Gear and Mithril

Hero Gear progression no longer ends with basic Mastery Forging.

Once an eligible Hero Gear piece reaches Enhancement Level 100 and Mastery Level 10, it can be ascended into Legendary Hero Gear by consuming two additional Mythic Hero Gear pieces.

After ascension, further milestones require additional Mastery levels, Hero Gear, and Mithril.

What Is Mithril Used For?

Mithril is a late-game Hero Gear ascension material. It is used at advanced enhancement milestones after the initial Legendary/Red gear ascension.

Current sources include:

  • Frostdragon Tyrant
  • Arena Shop
  • Labyrinth Shop
  • Journey of Light
  • Seasonal event shops
  • Selected packs

Mithril is much harder to accumulate than ordinary Enhancement XP. Avoid spending it simply to increase displayed Power on a secondary Hero.

When Should You Start Using Mithril?

Mithril investment makes the most sense when:

  • The Hero class is part of your long-term first formation.
  • The gear piece already has substantial Enhancement and Mastery investment.
  • The resulting stat bonus supports that Hero’s actual role.
  • You have enough Mythic gear available for the accompanying ascension costs.

Players who are still replacing their main Heroes frequently are usually better served by preserving Mithril until their core Hero Gear plan is more stable.

4. Chief Gear

Chief Gear unlocks at Furnace Level 22 and is the equipment system that most closely resembles actual crafting in Whiteout Survival.

Chief Gear improves troop Attack and Defense rather than being tied to one specific Hero.

Which Troops Does Each Chief Gear Piece Improve?

Chief Gear Pieces Troop Type Main Stats
Cap and Watch Lancer Attack and Defense
Coat and Pants Infantry Attack and Defense
Ring and Weapon Marksman Attack and Defense

Chief Gear Materials

Chief Gear progression uses four important materials as quality increases:

  • Hardened Alloy: Core Chief Gear material used from the beginning.
  • Polishing Solution: Another core material required for Chief Gear development.
  • Design Plans: Begin appearing in the upgrade requirements from Blue Chief Gear onward.
  • Lunar Amber: Required during later Red Chief Gear progression.

Hardened Alloy can currently come from sources such as Polar Terrors, Intel Missions, Crazy Joe, Foundry Shop, Canyon Shop, Alliance Championship Shop, Level 22–30 Beasts, and material chests.

Polishing Solution and Design Plans are available through overlapping event and shop sources, including Crazy Joe, Foundry, Canyon, Alliance Championship, Intel Missions, Tundra Trading Station, and other eligible rewards depending on the material.

Chief Gear Set Bonuses Matter

Chief Gear provides additional bonuses when several equipped pieces reach the same quality threshold:

  • 3 pieces of the same quality: unlock an additional Defense bonus for all three troop types.
  • 6 pieces of the same quality: unlock an additional Attack bonus for all three troop types.

Because of these breakpoints, pushing one Chief Gear piece far ahead is not always the best use of materials.

For many developing accounts, bringing the weakest pieces up to the next three-piece or six-piece set threshold provides more total combat value.

Chief Gear Material Exchange

Later in Chief Gear progression, reaching Mythic T2 3-Star on a piece unlocks the Chief Gear Enhancement Material Exchange. This allows different Chief Gear materials to be exchanged, giving advanced accounts more flexibility when one material becomes a bottleneck.

5. Chief Charms

Chief Charms unlock at Furnace Level 25. They are installed on Chief Gear and provide troop Health and Lethality, complementing the Attack and Defense provided by Chief Gear itself.

Each Chief Gear piece can hold three Charms.

Chief Gear Pieces Charm Troop Type Main Charm Stats
Coat and Pants Infantry Health and Lethality
Cap and Watch Lancer Health and Lethality
Ring and Weapon Marksman Health and Lethality

Chief Charm Materials

Charm progression uses:

Charm Guides and Designs are currently found through sources including Intel Missions, Castle Battle, Frostdragon Tyrant, Foundry Shop, State of Power Shop, Canyon Shop, Frostfire Mine, Tundra Trading Station, chests, and packs.

Charm Secrets become important after Level 11. The Chief Charm Material Exchange can also be unlocked after reaching the required Level 11 Charm milestone.

Should Chief Charms Be Balanced?

There is no universal answer.

A balanced approach is useful for accounts that regularly use all troop types and want steady overall growth. More specialized players can prioritize the Charm stats connected to their most important rally or defensive troops.

Examples include:

  • Rally leaders: May prioritize damage-oriented troop classes that contribute most to the main rally.
  • Garrison leaders: May put more weight on Infantry durability and the troop mix used for defense.
  • Rally joiners: Usually gain reliable value from balanced account-wide development.
  • F2P players: Benefit from avoiding large material imbalances unless a clear combat goal justifies them.

6. Hero Exclusive Gear and Widgets

Eligible Mythic/Gold-quality Heroes can have Hero-specific Exclusive Gear. Unlike regular Hero Gear, this equipment belongs to one particular Hero and cannot simply be transferred to another Hero.

Exclusive Gear can provide:

  • Hero Attack
  • Hero Defense
  • Hero Health
  • Troop Health and Lethality
  • Two additional Hero-specific Exclusive Skills

Exclusive Gear is upgraded with Widgets. Widget chests are commonly generation-specific, so choosing the wrong generation or Hero can lock scarce resources into a unit you soon stop using.

Where Do Widgets Come From?

Widget availability depends on Hero generation and state progression. Current sources can include:

  • Hall of Heroes generation Widget chests
  • Mystery Shop
  • Enigma-related rewards
  • Selectable Widget chests
  • Limited events
  • Packs

Hall of Heroes is especially useful for older-generation Widget chests as your state progresses.

Do Not Open Selectable Widget Chests Too Early

Before selecting a Widget, ask:

  • Will this Hero remain in my first formation?
  • Is the Hero developed to a useful star level?
  • Does the Exclusive Skill benefit my main game mode?
  • Am I close to replacing this Hero with a newer generation?
  • Would another Hero gain substantially more from the chest?

A high Exclusive Gear level does not compensate for an underdeveloped Hero that rarely enters combat.

! Important: Do not treat Enhancement XP Components, Essence Stones, Mithril, Widgets, Chief Gear materials, and Charm materials as interchangeable resources. They belong to separate progression systems, and the rarest late-game items should be reserved for Heroes and troop classes that are likely to remain important.

Where to Get Gear Upgrade Materials

No single event supplies every equipment material. A strong account builds gear by participating consistently across Arena, alliance events, shops, PvP events, Exploration, and rotating progression content.

Activity or Source Common Gear-Related Value
Exploration and related rewards Hero Gear and general Hero progression
Bear Hunt Enhancement-related rewards and Essence Stones
Arena and Arena Shop Hero Gear progression, Essence Stones, Mythic Hero Gear options, and later Mithril
Intel Missions Enhancement XP, Essence Stones, Chief Gear materials, and Charm materials depending on progression
Crazy Joe Hardened Alloy, Polishing Solution, and eligible Chief Gear progression materials
Polar Terror and higher-level Beasts Hardened Alloy and other progression rewards
Frostfire Mine Chief Gear and Chief Charm materials
Foundry Shop Essence Stones, Chief Gear materials, Charm materials, and other progression items
Canyon Shop Essence Stones, Chief Gear materials, and Charm materials
Tundra Trading Station Hero Gear XP, Essence Stones, Design Plans, Charm materials, and other rotating items
Hall of Heroes Generation-specific and previous-generation Widget chests
Labyrinth Shop Hero Gear progression materials including late-game Mithril
Limited-time events Varies by state age and event rotation

Shop inventories and event rewards can change as a state progresses. Always check the current item description and shop inventory before spending limited currencies.

What Gear Materials Should You Prioritize?

Early Game: Furnace 15–21

Your main goal is establishing usable Hero Gear on the Heroes you actually play.

Prioritize:

  1. Equipping your main combat Heroes.
  2. Using Enhancement XP efficiently.
  3. Avoiding unnecessary investment in unused Heroes.
  4. Beginning Mastery Forging only on gear worth keeping.

Mid Game: Furnace 22–25

Chief Gear and then Chief Charms add account-wide troop statistics.

Prioritize:

  1. Keeping Chief Gear close enough in quality to reach set bonuses.
  2. Accumulating Hardened Alloy and Polishing Solution consistently.
  3. Saving Design Plans for higher-quality upgrades.
  4. Starting Chief Charms once Furnace 25 is reached.
  5. Continuing focused Hero Gear Mastery on your first formation.

Late Game

Resource efficiency becomes more important because several scarce systems compete for long-term event and shop currencies.

Prioritize:

  • Essence Stones on core Hero Gear.
  • Mithril only on long-term Hero Gear pieces.
  • Lunar Amber for planned high-tier Chief Gear upgrades.
  • Charm Secrets where higher Charm levels provide meaningful value.
  • Widgets for Heroes expected to remain in your main roster.

F2P and Low-Spend Players

F2P players gain the most from avoiding scattered upgrades. Select a first formation, build transferable regular Hero Gear around those troop classes, and preserve Widgets and Mithril until the investment target is clear.

Event timing is also valuable. If an upcoming event awards points for Essence Stones, Widgets, Mithril, Chief Gear, or Charms, saving the upgrade can let the same material generate both permanent combat power and event rewards.

Spenders and Competitive Rally Leaders

Competitive players can specialize more aggressively, but set bonuses and troop balance still matter. A rally leader may prioritize the troop class and gear pieces that produce the largest gain in the primary attacking formation, while a garrison-focused player may invest differently.

If you are comparing very different levels of established progression rather than building every gear system from the beginning, viewing a wos account for sale is an optional alternative. Compare Chief Gear, Chief Charms, Hero Gear, Mithril progression, Widgets, Hero generations, research, state age, and transfer conditions rather than total Power alone.

Common Gear and Crafting Mistakes

Looking for a General Crafting Workshop

Whiteout Survival does not use a survival-game crafting table where you manually create axes, bows, clothing, or food containers. Equipment progression is handled through its dedicated Hero Gear, Chief Gear, Charm, and Exclusive Gear systems.

Upgrading Every Hero Equally

Spreading Hero Gear XP, Essence Stones, and other resources across every unlocked Hero usually weakens the formation you use most.

Consuming Useful Hero Gear Too Early

Spare gear can be Enhancement material, but higher-quality pieces become valuable in advanced Hero Gear progression. Review important gear before consuming it.

Ignoring Chief Gear Set Bonuses

Three-piece and six-piece quality bonuses can make balanced Chief Gear progression more valuable than pushing one piece far beyond the rest.

Spending Essence Stones on Temporary Gear

Mastery Forging is more expensive and less forgiving than basic Hero Gear Enhancement. Concentrate Essence Stones on equipment likely to remain useful.

Using Mithril on a Secondary Hero

Mithril is a late-game bottleneck. Spending it because one Hero has slightly higher displayed Power can delay a much more important first-formation upgrade.

Opening Widget Chests Without a Hero Plan

Widgets are Hero- and generation-dependent. Keep selectable chests unopened until you know which Exclusive Gear you actually intend to develop.

Ignoring Charm Secrets

Players approaching Chief Charm Level 12 should plan for Charm Secrets rather than looking only at their Charm Guide and Charm Design reserves.

Ignoring Event Timing

Gear development frequently appears in progression-event scoring. Check current event requirements before emptying a large stockpile of Essence Stones, Widgets, Mithril, Chief Gear materials, or Charm materials.

Focusing Only on Power

A larger Power number does not guarantee that an upgrade improves the formation you care about most. Evaluate the specific Attack, Defense, Health, Lethality, Hero, troop-class, rally, or defender bonuses involved.

FAQs

Can you craft weapons and tools in Whiteout Survival?

No. Whiteout Survival does not have a general survival-tool crafting system for axes, bows, clothing, containers, or similar items. Chief Gear is the main equipment system that uses direct crafting and upgrade materials.

When does Hero Gear unlock?

Hero Gear unlocks at Furnace Level 15. It can be enhanced with Enhancement XP Components, spare Hero Gear, or a combination of both.

What are Essence Stones used for?

Essence Stones are used for Mastery Forging. Mastery becomes available at Furnace Level 20 when an eligible Gold Hero Gear piece reaches Enhancement Level 20.

What is Mithril used for in Whiteout Survival?

Mithril is used in advanced Hero Gear progression after a suitable piece has been ascended beyond the initial Level 100 and Mastery 10 requirement. It is one of the more valuable late-game Hero Gear materials.

When does Chief Gear unlock, and what materials does it use?

Chief Gear unlocks at Furnace Level 22. Its progression uses Hardened Alloy and Polishing Solution first, with Design Plans and later Lunar Amber becoming necessary at higher qualities.

What is the difference between Chief Gear and Chief Charms?

Chief Gear primarily improves troop Attack and Defense. Chief Charms unlock at Furnace Level 25 and primarily improve troop Health and Lethality.

What are Widgets used for?

Widgets upgrade Hero-specific Exclusive Gear. Higher Exclusive Gear levels improve stats and can strengthen the two Exclusive Skills attached to that Hero’s equipment.

Should I save gear materials for events?

Often, yes. Development events can award points for Hero Gear Mastery, Mithril, Widgets, Chief Gear, or Chief Charms. Check the current event requirements before using a large material reserve.

Conclusion

Whiteout Survival gear progression is less about traditional survival crafting and more about investing the correct material in the correct equipment system. Hero Gear and Essence Stones dominate early-to-mid Hero development, Chief Gear and Charms add account-wide troop stats, while Mithril, Lunar Amber, Charm Secrets, and Widgets become increasingly important later.
