Alwyn is an Epic Magic Control hero in Call of Dragons who specializes in slowing enemy Legions, dealing sustained Magic Skill damage, and making it difficult for opponents to disengage from unfavorable fights.
Unlike the healing-focused descriptions found in some older guides, Alwyn does not primarily heal allies or cleanse debuffs. His real identity is built around Ensnare, March Speed reduction, Magic damage over time, Magic-unit stat bonuses, and battlefield control.
His Epic rarity makes him particularly valuable to newer and free-to-play players who need a functional Magic commander without committing scarce Legendary resources. Later in account progression, stronger Legendary Magic heroes can replace him in your primary formation, but a fully developed Alwyn can remain useful as a secondary Magic commander.
This guide covers the best Alwyn talent tree, his actual skills, skill priority, Magic pairings, Artifacts, War Pet choices, troop setup, and practical PvP strategy.

Who Is Alwyn in Call of Dragons?
Alwyn, the Master of Poisons, is a Springwardens commander designed to control individual enemy Legions through sustained Magic damage and movement reduction.
His gameplay revolves around Ensnare. When an enemy is Ensnared, it receives repeated Magic Skill damage while suffering reduced March Speed.
This gives Alwyn a clear battlefield purpose:
Apply Ensnare → Slow the Target → Deal Damage Over Time → Prevent Easy Escape → Maintain Allied Pressure
Alwyn is therefore better at controlling and wearing down individual targets than producing enormous multi-target burst damage.
He is particularly useful when your alliance is trying to:
- Catch a retreating Legion.
- Keep an enemy inside allied attack range.
- Pressure an isolated target.
- Apply sustained Magic damage.
- Combine multiple debuffs on one enemy.
Is Alwyn Good in Call of Dragons?
Alwyn is a good early-game and free-to-play Magic hero.
His greatest strengths are accessibility and control rather than maximum endgame damage.
Key advantages include:
- Epic rarity, making him easier to maximize than Legendary heroes.
- Reliable March Speed reduction.
- Sustained Magic Skill damage.
- 10% Magic ATK for Magic units at maximum Wealdshield.
- 10% Magic-unit HP at maximum Wealdshield.
- 15% reduced normal attack damage taken in the field.
- Additional Ensnare opportunities when attacked.
- Strong synergy with other Magic and debuff heroes.
- Very Far attack range.
His disadvantages become more noticeable on mature accounts:
- Low initial burst compared with modern Legendary damage heroes.
- Mostly single-target control rather than large-scale AoE.
- Relies on keeping the enemy within combat range.
- Later Magic heroes provide stronger specialized PvP performance.
- His main strength is utility rather than carrying an entire march through raw damage.
For those reasons, Alwyn should generally be developed because he is efficient and accessible, not because you expect him to remain your strongest Magic commander forever.
Best Alwyn Talent Tree in Call of Dragons
Alwyn has access to the Magic, PvP, and Control talent trees.
For most players using him in open-field combat, the strongest overall direction is:
Recommended Alwyn Build: Control + Magic
This reinforces both sides of Alwyn’s kit:
- Control improves his ability to exploit slowed and debuffed enemies.
- Magic strengthens the Magic Legion and his Skill damage.
Alwyn Control Talent Tree
The Control tree is a natural foundation because Alwyn repeatedly applies Ensnare and March Speed reduction.
Prioritize talents that improve:
- Damage against debuffed targets.
- Control-related damage.
- March Speed control.
- Hero Skill damage.
- General Legion survivability.
The objective is to punish enemies for remaining under Alwyn’s control effects rather than treating him as a pure burst mage.
Alwyn Magic Talent Tree
The Magic tree complements Wealdshield and Venomous Overgrowth.
Prioritize effects that improve:
- Magic ATK.
- Magic-unit HP.
- Magic Skill damage.
- Rage generation where available.
- General ranged combat performance.
Because Wealdshield already increases Magic-unit ATK and HP, additional Magic talents help turn Alwyn into a more complete commander rather than focusing only on his slowing effect.
Alwyn PvP Talent Tree
PvP talents become more relevant if Alwyn is consistently used as your primary open-field hero.
Useful bonuses include:
- Damage against enemy Lords.
- Open-field survivability.
- March Speed.
- Damage against controlled or weakened enemies.
For most developing accounts, however, Control + Magic provides the clearest synergy with Alwyn’s actual skills.
Important: Only the primary hero’s talent tree applies to the Legion. If Alwyn is being used as a secondary hero behind Waldyr, Liliya, Velyn, or another Magic commander, optimize the primary hero’s talents instead.
Alwyn Skills Explained
Older Alwyn guides sometimes list abilities such as Wrath of the Forest, Nature’s Blessing, Rootbind, and Guardian of the Woods. These are not his documented Call of Dragons skills.
Alwyn’s real abilities are:
| Skill | Type | Main Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Venomous Overgrowth | Rage Skill | Deals Magic Skill damage and inflicts Ensnare, causing additional damage over time and reducing March Speed. |
| Wealdshield | Passive | Increases Magic ATK and HP for Magic units in Alwyn’s Legion. |
| Oath of the Wellspring | Passive | Reduces normal attack damage taken while fighting in the field. |
| Friend of the Hemlock | Passive | When attacked, Alwyn can Ensnare the attacker, dealing Magic damage over time and reducing its March Speed. |
| Miasmic Mist | Awakening | Enhances Venomous Overgrowth with additional Magic Skill damage when the target is already affected by another Magic damage effect. |
Venomous Overgrowth
Venomous Overgrowth is Alwyn’s signature Rage Skill and the most important ability to develop first.
It deals an initial instance of Magic Skill damage to one target and then applies Ensnare.
The initial Damage Factor progresses through:
- Level 1: 300
- Level 2: 360
- Level 3: 420
- Level 4: 500
- Level 5: 600
Afterward, Ensnare deals additional Magic Skill damage with Damage Factor 100 every second and reduces the enemy Legion’s March Speed by 10% for three seconds.
This gives Venomous Overgrowth three different functions:
- Initial Magic damage.
- Sustained damage over time.
- Movement control.
The slowing effect is particularly useful when an enemy is attempting to retreat from your alliance’s focus fire.
Control Tip: Alwyn creates more strategic value when allies can capitalize on Ensnare. Slowing an enemy matters far more when nearby Legions are ready to continue attacking the target.
Wealdshield
Wealdshield is a straightforward but valuable Magic-unit passive.
At maximum level, Magic units in Alwyn’s Legion gain:
- 10% Magic ATK.
- 10% HP.
The combination improves both damage and survivability.
Magic ATK strengthens Venomous Overgrowth, its damage-over-time component, Friend of the Hemlock, and Miasmic Mist.
The HP bonus helps a ranged Magic formation remain in combat longer.
This skill is also the main reason Alwyn should normally lead or support a full Magic Legion.
Oath of the Wellspring
Oath of the Wellspring improves Alwyn’s durability in open-field combat.
It reduces the normal attack damage his Legion receives while fighting in the field.
The reduction scales through:
- 5%
- 7%
- 9%
- 12%
- 15% at maximum level
Although Alwyn is still not a tank, this passive makes him harder to eliminate through sustained normal attacks.
It is particularly useful because control heroes often need to stay engaged long enough to apply Ensnare several times rather than simply casting one Rage Skill and immediately leaving.
Friend of the Hemlock
Friend of the Hemlock gives Alwyn another method of applying Ensnare.
Whenever his Legion is attacked, there is a chance to Ensnare the attacker.
At maximum level, the activation chance reaches 15%.
The effect:
- Deals Magic Skill damage every second with Damage Factor 100.
- Reduces the enemy’s March Speed by 10%.
- Lasts for three seconds.
This gives Alwyn a reactive control mechanic.
An enemy trying to pressure the Magic Legion can potentially slow itself in the process, giving Alwyn and nearby allies more time to maintain contact or reposition.
Because the skill activates when Alwyn is attacked, he gains value from surviving longer—but this does not mean you should intentionally move him into the center of an enemy swarm.
Miasmic Mist
Miasmic Mist is Alwyn’s Awakening and enhances Venomous Overgrowth.
The enhanced skill retains:
- Damage Factor 600 on the initial hit.
- Ensnare.
- Damage Factor 100 per second during the Ensnare effect.
- 10% March Speed reduction for three seconds.
The important addition is an extra condition:
If the target is already suffering from another Magic damage-based effect, Miasmic Mist deals an additional instance of Magic Skill damage with Damage Factor 200.
This makes debuff and Magic-damage synergy more important after Awakening.
Alwyn becomes noticeably better when paired with another hero capable of keeping additional Magic effects on the same target.
Best Alwyn Skill Order
Because Alwyn is Epic, fully developing him is realistic for most active players.
Your first priority should still be:
Max Venomous Overgrowth First
A sensible progression is:
- Venomous Overgrowth
- Wealdshield
- Oath of the Wellspring
- Friend of the Hemlock
- Miasmic Mist through Awakening
Why the First Skill Matters Most
Venomous Overgrowth determines:
- Alwyn’s initial Rage Skill damage.
- His primary Ensnare application.
- His main March Speed reduction.
- Much of his single-target control.
Maximizing it before spreading early upgrades gives you a functional Alwyn much sooner.
Should You Awaken Alwyn?
Yes, if you regularly use him.
Alwyn is Epic rather than Legendary, so completing his skills is relatively inexpensive.
Miasmic Mist also adds real synergy rather than only a minor stat increase, rewarding targets that are already affected by another Magic damage effect.
For an early Magic roster, a fully Awakened Alwyn is therefore a reasonable investment.
Best Hero Pairings for Alwyn
Waldyr + Alwyn
Waldyr + Alwyn is one of the strongest practical early-game pairings.
Both heroes use Magic units and both can pressure enemy movement while contributing Magic damage.
Waldyr provides stronger AoE Skill pressure, while Alwyn focuses more heavily on single-target control and sustained debuffs.
The pairing works well because:
- Both benefit from full Magic troops.
- Both contribute Magic Skill damage.
- Alwyn can slow targets and make disengagement harder.
- Waldyr provides stronger offensive pressure.
- Both heroes are Epic and comparatively easy to develop.
For most developing accounts, Waldyr should usually be primary when his Magic/Skills talent tree provides the stronger offensive setup, with Alwyn contributing control as Deputy.
Atheus + Alwyn
Atheus is another accessible Magic partner.
The pairing offers:
- Magic-unit synergy.
- Single-target damage.
- Rage-related utility.
- Alwyn’s Ensnare and March Speed control.
This is particularly useful when Waldyr is already assigned to another Legion.
Atheus can also bring more mobility to a formation that would otherwise rely heavily on Alwyn’s control mechanics.
Liliya + Alwyn
Liliya offers a higher-damage Legendary option.
Her Scorch mechanic creates ongoing Magic damage, while Alwyn’s Awakening specifically rewards targets already suffering from another Magic damage-based effect.
The combination therefore has a natural interaction:
Liliya Applies Magic Damage Effects → Alwyn Uses Miasmic Mist → Extra Magic Damage
However, mature accounts usually have stronger premium partners for Liliya, so this should be treated as a roster-dependent pairing rather than an automatic endgame recommendation.
Velyn + Alwyn
Velyn provides another Control-oriented Magic option.
Both heroes are effective at limiting enemy movement and applying battlefield control, creating a formation that can make it difficult for a target to escape.
This setup is more about control and sustained pressure than immediate burst damage.
As with Liliya, established accounts may have stronger modern pairings available for Velyn, so use Alwyn when he fits your remaining march structure rather than automatically breaking a superior formation.
Which Alwyn Pairing Is Best?
For most developing players:
- Waldyr + Alwyn: best accessible all-around Magic pairing.
- Atheus + Alwyn: useful F2P alternative.
- Liliya + Alwyn: higher-damage option when your roster allows it.
- Velyn + Alwyn: control-heavy Legendary alternative.
The strongest choice depends on skill development. A fully developed Epic Waldyr will often outperform a poorly developed Legendary hero used only because of rarity.
Best Troops for Alwyn
Use Magic units.
Wealdshield specifically increases Magic-unit ATK and HP, so mixed troops lose part of Alwyn’s core passive value.
A full Magic Legion provides:
- Maximum value from Wealdshield.
- Higher Magic Skill damage.
- Better synergy with Magic talents.
- Better synergy with Magic Artifacts.
- Better War Pet compatibility.
- Better synergy with Waldyr, Atheus, Liliya, and Velyn.
When Alwyn is Deputy, match the troop type to the primary hero—but in his most natural pairings, that will still be Magic.
Best Artifacts for Alwyn
The best Artifact depends on whether you prioritize Control, damage, survivability, or mobility.
| Artifact | Best Use |
|---|---|
| Thunder Elegy | Modern Magic / PvP / Control setup. |
| Phoenix Eye | Aggressive Magic damage and AoE pressure. |
| Breath of Jargentis | Magic utility and support. |
| Tear of Arbon | More defensive Magic PvP setup. |
| Fang of Ashkari | Tankier Magic PvP option. |
| Magic Bomb | Accessible offensive Epic option. |
| Spirit Bangle | Accessible defensive/support Magic option. |
Thunder Elegy
Thunder Elegy is a natural modern option because its Magic, PvP, and Control profile matches Alwyn’s own specializations extremely closely.
It is most relevant to developed accounts that already own the Artifact and want Alwyn to function as a primary Control commander.
Do not heavily develop a premium late-game Artifact solely for Alwyn if he is already being replaced in your main Magic march.
Phoenix Eye
Phoenix Eye is an excellent offensive option when your priority is Magic damage.
Its active skill provides substantial multi-target Magic pressure, helping compensate for Alwyn’s naturally single-target-focused Rage Skill.
Breath of Jargentis
Breath of Jargentis is a useful Magic Support option when you value broader utility over maximum personal damage.
Tear of Arbon and Fang of Ashkari
These are useful when your Alwyn formation needs more durability.
A small reduction in theoretical damage can be worthwhile if additional HP or defensive value allows Alwyn to remain alive for another Venomous Overgrowth cycle.
Magic Bomb and Spirit Bangle
For developing accounts, Epic Artifacts are often more sensible.
- Magic Bomb: offensive Magic pressure.
- Spirit Bangle: more defensive/support-oriented Magic build.
A highly developed Epic Artifact can outperform an undeveloped Legendary option in real combat.
Artifact Tip: If Alwyn is being used as a secondary hero, his Artifact does not determine the Legion’s build. Equip your strongest relevant Artifact on the primary hero instead.
Best War Pet for Alwyn
Sapphire Faedrake
Sapphire Faedrake is one of the best War Pet options for Alwyn.
The basic reason is straightforward: Sapphire Faedrake is designed for Magic formations and deals Magic War Pet Skill damage.
There is also a more specific interaction with Alwyn’s kit.
The War Pet skill Forceful Painbloom can increase Painbloom’s future damage whenever the Legion inflicts certain status effects—including Ensnare.
Alwyn applies Ensnare through:
- Venomous Overgrowth.
- Friend of the Hemlock.
- Miasmic Mist.
That creates a natural synergy between Alwyn’s Control mechanics and Sapphire Faedrake’s damage scaling.
Sapphire Faedrake Attributes
Useful attribute priorities include:
- Intelligence
- Spirit
- Luck
These attributes improve different parts of Magic War Pet Skill performance, Crit potential, and compatible acquired skills.
Useful Sapphire Faedrake Skills
Look for effects such as:
- Forceful Painbloom for Ensnare synergy.
- Follow Up for additional Magic War Pet Skill activations.
- Magic Spirits for Crit damage.
- Split Painbloom for additional targets.
- Resonance for Magic War Pet Skill damage.
- Magic Fortune for Crit Rate.
The best combination still depends on the individual pet available on your account.
Other Magic War Pets
If you do not have a developed Sapphire Faedrake, use the best Magic-compatible War Pet already available.
Do not replace an excellent existing pet with a poor Sapphire Faedrake simply because the species has better theoretical synergy.
How to Play Alwyn Effectively
1. Use Ensnare to Punish Retreating Enemies
Alwyn’s March Speed reduction becomes particularly valuable against an enemy trying to leave combat.
Coordinate with allied Legions so the target remains under pressure during the three-second Ensnare window.
2. Focus Important Single Targets
Alwyn is not primarily an AoE hero.
His best targets are often:
- Enemy Legions trying to retreat.
- Isolated damage dealers.
- Targets already being focused by allies.
- Enemy commanders affected by additional Magic damage effects.
- High-value targets that need to be kept within range.
Do not expect him to produce Liliya-level AoE pressure against a large cluster.
3. Keep a Full Magic Legion
Wealdshield provides up to 10% Magic ATK and 10% HP specifically to Magic units.
Using unrelated troop types sacrifices part of Alwyn’s strongest passive.
4. Maintain Very Far Range
Alwyn’s attack range allows him to contribute from a relatively safe position.
Stay behind tougher allied Legions whenever possible instead of moving a control mage into the center of enemy focus fire.
5. Do Not Confuse Damage Reduction With Tanking
Oath of the Wellspring can reduce normal attack damage by 15%, but Alwyn remains a ranged Magic commander.
The passive improves survivability; it does not turn him into a frontline Infantry tank.
6. Use Additional Magic Effects Before Miasmic Mist
After Awakening, Alwyn deals extra Magic Skill damage when his target is already affected by another Magic damage-based effect.
This makes pairing and target selection more important.
Heroes that apply sustained Magic effects can help Alwyn obtain more value from Miasmic Mist.
7. Coordinate Debuffs
Alwyn performs better when his control is part of a larger focus-fire strategy.
Combine Ensnare with:
- Other slowing effects.
- Damage-amplifying debuffs.
- Magic damage over time.
- Allied focus fire.
The goal is not simply to make the enemy move slightly slower—it is to use that reduced mobility to create a favorable combat outcome.
8. Reposition Before Several Enemies Focus You
Friend of the Hemlock can punish attackers, but its activation chance is not a reason to absorb unnecessary damage.
If multiple Legions begin targeting Alwyn, move before his Magic formation takes severe losses.
9. Use the Correct Primary Hero
If Alwyn is paired with a better-developed Waldyr, Liliya, or Velyn, consider letting that hero lead.
The primary position determines the talent tree and other build elements, so hero placement should reflect:
- Hero level.
- Skill development.
- Talent tree.
- Artifact quality.
- War Pet.
- Your specific battle objective.
Is Alwyn Worth Investing In?
Alwyn is worth investing in primarily because he is an accessible Epic Magic hero.
He is particularly useful for:
- New players.
- Free-to-play accounts.
- Early Magic formations.
- Players who already use Waldyr.
- Players who need an additional Magic Legion.
- Accounts without multiple completed Legendary Magic heroes.
- Players who value movement control and debuffs.
His investment priority drops when:
- You already have multiple modern Legendary Magic heroes.
- Your primary Magic pairing is complete.
- You only field one Magic Legion.
- Your account has stronger Control commanders available.
Because Alwyn uses Epic development resources, completing him naturally is still reasonable even after he leaves your primary march.
Players comparing the progression required to build a developed Magic roster from the beginning with starting from an established setup can also review a call of dragons account for sale, although Alwyn’s actual performance still depends on his skills, primary partner, Magic technology, Artifact, War Pet, and battlefield positioning.
Common Alwyn Build Mistakes
- Calling Alwyn a healer: His real kit is centered on Magic damage and Control rather than direct allied healing.
- Using the wrong faction: Alwyn belongs to the Springwardens, not the League of Order.
- Using fictional skills: Wrath of the Forest, Nature’s Blessing, Rootbind, and Guardian of the Woods are not his documented abilities.
- Building Support talents: Alwyn’s actual talent specializations are Magic, PvP, and Control.
- Using mixed troop types: Wealdshield specifically rewards Magic units.
- Expecting huge AoE damage: Alwyn is more focused on single-target control and sustained pressure.
- Ignoring Ensnare: March Speed reduction is central to his battlefield utility.
- Ignoring the updated Friend of the Hemlock chance: Its maximum activation chance is 15% rather than the older 10% value.
- Standing on the frontline: Damage reduction helps, but Alwyn remains a ranged Magic commander.
- Ignoring Magic damage effects after Awakening: Miasmic Mist gains additional value when another Magic effect is already active on the target.
- Choosing a partner solely by rarity: A fully developed Waldyr can outperform an underdeveloped Legendary option.
- Ignoring Sapphire Faedrake: Forceful Painbloom has direct synergy with Alwyn’s repeated Ensnare effects.
- Overinvesting after replacing him: Alwyn is excellent for efficient early progression but should not prevent investment in stronger later-generation Magic heroes.

Conclusion
The best Alwyn talent tree for most players emphasizes Control and Magic. His actual gameplay revolves around slowing enemies, applying Ensnare, dealing sustained Magic Skill damage, and making it difficult for important targets to disengage.
Prioritize Venomous Overgrowth, use a full Magic Legion, and build around the synergy between Ensnare, Magic ATK, and debuffed targets. Wealdshield provides useful ATK and HP, Oath of the Wellspring reduces normal-attack pressure, and Friend of the Hemlock gives Alwyn another way to control enemies that attack him.
After Awakening, Miasmic Mist creates additional synergy with heroes who apply other Magic damage effects. This makes pairings such as Waldyr, Atheus, Liliya, or Velyn useful depending on your roster and progression.
For equipment, select a Magic Artifact that matches your objective rather than chasing rarity alone. Thunder Elegy is naturally aligned with Control play, while Phoenix Eye emphasizes damage. Sapphire Faedrake is particularly attractive because its Forceful Painbloom mechanic can directly benefit from Alwyn’s Ensnare effects.
Alwyn is not a healing Support mage and should not be built like one. Used correctly, he is an accessible Magic Control commander who specializes in trapping, slowing, and steadily wearing down enemy Legions—an excellent role for early progression and secondary Magic formations.
